al fresco books/pastry/coffee extravaganza

I was supposed to get out of the way so the sepia-toned, slanting-sun wonder of Sunday in Trinity Bellwoods could be properly captured. Didn't hunch fast enough. The guy with the ukelele was excellent.

Mantis Attack! Cloverfield, Toronto edition

This fearsome beast showed up in the back door screen last night. It overturned a car, plucked an army helecopter out of the sky, then rid us of backyard pests.

Strangely, it's been a great year for praying mantises for us. Four of them this fall. I'm thinking it means good luck. Or an elevated aphid population in the pear tree.

Banff morning trail run (in September, not this morning)

Cleaning off the iPhone, came across this series of photos of my run from the Banff Centre up the Tunnel Mountain Trail and back. I was spending some time with the excellent Book Publishers of Alberta at their fall AGM. So beautiful up there, and lots of action on the trail at 7am -- wiry, silver-haired hikers, walkers with dogs, elk. Being able to run up a mountain is a nice payoff for the last 6 months of focus on fitness.

High Park in Fall - brilliant!

Back from 3 weeks on the road just in time for fall to bust out all over. At High Park for a great al fresco birthday party (Leaf fights! Piñatas!)

RIP Sam, left for dead in Frankfurt after being attacked by Air Canada

My faithful Samsonite (which should probably be called "Samesonite" because of its dubious Shanghai provenance) has traveled with me everywhere - Frankfurt, London, all through the US and Canada, HK, China, France, the Caribbean. But its wily backstreet Chinese streetsmarts were no match for the dark satanic mills of Air Canada baggage handling, which left it with irreparable injuries after the flight from Toronto. So, at the insistence of a certain publishing CEO with very strong opinions on luggage, Rimowa replaces Sam, suffused below with near-death white light.

Insomnia at #fbf09 but saved by YouTube. Loving @Pomplamoose

These lovely folks introduced me to the idea of the VideoSong. They say it best:

A VideoSong is a new Medium with two rules:

1. What you see is what you hear (no lip-syncing for instruments or voice).
2. If you hear it, at some point you see it (no hidden sounds).

They have some great songs of their own, and some excellent covers. (Check out their Earth, Wind & Fire's September and Beyoncé's Single Ladies. Sweeet.)

Good morning from Frankfurt #fbf09 #fb

A good night's sleep and I'm feeling like a million bucks. Sun's up, Ffurt looks great and the morning light is glinting off my gilt tech-baroque pimp furniture. Big day ahead: Shortcovers meetings with publishers, publishers, publishers, partners, and Hall 8 sprints.

Yesterday was back-to-back fantastic audiences at TOC Frankfurt, the UN publishers forum and the Canada/Germany Publisher Symposium, dinner with one of our great conversion partners, and then complete collapse from exaustion. Mental note: 48 hrs on 5 hrs sleep is _not recommended_.

Still life from the #Shortcovers Frankfurt PowerPoint factory floor #fbf09 #tocfrankfurt

2 presentations down, 1 to go! As you can see, all of our ppt is handcrafted by skilled artisans in a factory decorated with a combination of Louis XIV and Austin Powers to maximize creativity, swinging-ness, shareholder value, and baroque splendor.

(we would like to thank both Expedia and the global economic downturn for making rooms like this both affordable and available for booking just 2 days before the Fair starts!)

Suitcase appears to have been mauled by bears #fb

Or wolverines. Added to agenda: luggage shopping in Frankfurt. This is the karmic kickback for calling attention to my excellent upgrade.

(good news - foolish looking strap that I use despite bad aesthetics has avoided clothes-strewn-through-underground-conveyor-belt scenario. Score one for ugly/functional.)

Scandalous Frankfurt travel luxury! And if you aren't busy Tuesday... #fbf09

The travel gods smile and grant me access to Air Canada Executive Pod Land (thank you, super system-wide certificate!)

Not busy on Tuesday in Frankfurt? I'm speaking at:
* TOC Frankfurt
* the UN World Bank Digital Publishing Conference
* the Canada/Germany Publishing Symposium

And with this sweet ride across the atlantic, they will all get their presentations on time!
